The second half of the Heroes finale aired last night and although it was a good episode, it wasn't as satisfying as I had hoped. I had my usual Tuesday morning discussion with my fellow Heroes fans and we came up with the same gripes.
- Why didn't Sylar stop Hiro when he finally stabbed him? The only explanation that we can think of was that Sylar already doubted Hiro's ability to go through with it. But this is a disappointing reason. Even more disappointing was Hiro's weak attack. I'm sorry, Hiro, but in this episode you frustrated me. I would have rather seen some slicing and dicing... and perhaps you distributing the remains of Sylar to the rest of the heroes he pissed off. Or maybe that's too Tarantino.
- Why didn't Sylar just die?!? Do we really need him around still? There was already a reference to some new villain that gives the heeby jeebies to the "tracking system". Frankly, the tracking system herself gives me the creeps.
- Why didn't Peter just fly himself out of there rather than taking his brother to his fiery death? In Peter's defense, I think when he loses control of his powers he can't access any of his other powers. I got your back, Peter. Call me. Haha j/k :D
- Did Nathan really sacrifice himself up there with exploding Peter? What the hell was he thinking?!? I don't think he died. And I'm actually disappointed that I predicted this solution after the first premonition of the Peter-explosion. If Nathan was a smart cat, he would have flown him up there and jetted his ass out of there before Peter exploded. Hey Nathan, say what's up to the Silver Surfer while you're up there and ask him not to destroy our planet. We can do that ourselves.
A few other things that I thought were worth mentioning... I thought it would have been a good idea for Peter to have met Linderman so he could absorb his ability to heal. That way, even if the explosion happens they would say, "who cares?!" because Peter can just go around and heal everyone and possibly bring them back to life. I guess there wouldn't be much of a story after that... so maybe I take that back.
And anyone else make a connection with the cockroach at the very end and the reference to the cockroach in Mohinder's lecture in the first episode? Perhaps a Sylar/roach comparison considering all the evolution characteristics of the cockroach? Apparently, some others have already seen the significance of the roach. (Haha, a Heroes wiki... brilliant.)
And as a side note... did anyone notice that Sylar's mom is the chick from Little Shop of Horrors? No? Oh... I did, but I guess I just notice things like that.

So what's in store for the fans thirsting for more during the hiatus? There's talk of a spin off "Heroes: Origins" to take its time slot on Monday nights. It will feature new heroes discovering their powers, and they're going to add an interactive aspect to the show. Viewers will get to choose who stays. Sounds interesting. And like Nathan Petrelli, I hope it flies :P
